Sally Wurr
SW Venture Group and Better Coffee Today

Sally Wurr started her company, SW Venture Group, in 2008, and has been an entrepreneur for many years. She currently markets Organo Gold coffee through her Stern powered website BetterCoffee.Today, where she not only provides coffee lovers with a subscription coffee delivery service, but also mentors first-time entrepreneurs who want to start their own coffee distribution businesses. Sally chatted with DenPeeps to give us her advice on being an entrepreneur.

DenPeeps:

Why did you start your business?

Sally:

I started my coffee business because specialty coffee is growing 20% per year. We all like a good cup of coffee, and I liked the single-serve market that’s delivered directly to my home. If I can make some money from it, and help others make money, then that’s a win-win for everyone.

DenPeeps:

What’s the best advice you could give to someone starting a business?

Sally:

You have to do work to make money. Some people forget that it’s a four-letter word: W-O-R-K. You have to manage your time to do the work. You need to know, on a daily basis, what your goals are and work toward those goals. You have to have that focus and keep that focus as long as you can.

DenPeeps:

How do you take time off?

Sally:

One thing that us “workaholics” forget to do is take breathing time. I think it’s essential for anyone in business take some time, walk away from your business for just a little while, and breathe. You must schedule that. If it’s not written down, it’s never going to happen. I teach a lot of time management, and you always schedule time off, what you are going to do and when you’ll do it. This way, you don’t feel guilty, and always pad in a little extra time because, if you’re having fun, you’re not going to want to walk away.

DenPeeps:

How do you plan your day?

Sally:

I use Planner Pads, available in paper or digital formats. In the past I used to have Sticky Notes all over my computer screen. It was colorful but not efficient. With Planner Pads I’m able to schedule my categories, and anything wandering around in my head, I get it written down. It’s eliminated my Sticky Notes and organized my brain — I call it my “brain on steroids” — and once it’s written down and scheduled, it will get finished. My brain isn’t want is used to be, and Planner Plans helps tremendously.
